Joella, Natalia and Jorrien gave me the goal this year of creating a new video every month. This is a way to make sure I don't get overly wrapped up in school and work. I decided to start this blog as a way to report progress on my goal. The title was suggested by Joella in honor of Joseph and Jacie.

Rattleback

This month you get the movies I made for my Advanced Dynamics final project. It was a simulation I created on the rattleback. The rattleback is an asymetrical top that will spin one direction as you would expect, but if you spin it in the opposite direction then it will stop spinning, rock back and forth and then spin in the "preferred" direction.


This video shows a real rattleback as it spins in the preferred direction.


This shows what happens if you try to spin it in the unstable direction.


This shows that the rocking motion turns into a spin in the preferred direction.

Simulation of the rattleback if you let it run for a longer time. One of the crazy things about this toy is that it will reverse spin multiple times. In real life this doesn't happen for most rattlebacks because of friction slowing it down too much, but it is possible.
